CABALGATA
INTERNACIONAL 2010
We did the best we could, but the photos can't do a proper job of conveying the impression created by over 300 mounts and riders arriving at this tiny town. The Cabalgata Internacional is a cooperative amistad (friendship) effort between Mexico and the US that comes together during the celebration of Camp Furlong Days at Pancho Villa State Park near Columbus, NM.
History fans will recall that Columbus was the object of the only 20th century invasion by a foreign army onto US soil, when it was attacked by General Pancho Villa's forces in the early morning hours of March 6, 1916. The North American reprisal included the first US military use of airplanes and motorized ground vehicles. Under the command of General John 'Blackjack' Pershing, thousands of troops pursued the Villistas back into Mexico, in what turned out to be a precursive adventure to the First World War.

For this year's event, riders from Mexico were on the trail with their horses for as long as two weeks in order to arrive at Columbus on time for the procession.
(Top left photo) The first riders in the long cavalcade arrive at the old train station. (Top right) US military re-enactors gather around an armored vehicle of the era. (Bottom photos) Reknowned charro horseman and trainer Carlos Herrera of North Hurley, NM, demontrates Sajamali's skills before an enthusiastic crowd of spectators. Many people come to this event just to watch Carlos and his horses perform.
This unique celebration is a must-see for fans of horses and history. We will be adding more photos to this feature as soon as we can process them. For information on next year's Camp Furlong Days celebration, visit the Pancho Villa State Park website at:
